Each card in the Universal Card Game has an overall basic look and feel. This section will go over the differences with each type of card in the game.

Card Layout Diagram Character

Key Features of Character Cards

  1. Terra Cost
This is only on Archetype of Terra. This is a number that is listed on the top left hand corner of the card. This number is the total cost in Terra that needs to be paid from resource cards and/or other abilities to play the card from your hand.

  2. Card Name
The card name for a character card is listed in the middle of the top of the card. Remember you can only play a certain number of cards with the same name and serial number based on its Stability Value.

  3. Combat
This is the Combat Statistic of the character. This number represents both how much damage the character can deal and take during Encounters. Players can also use Effect cards to increase or decrease this Combat value. If a character takes damage from an effect equal to on in excess to their Combat, they are slain and sent to the Void. Also, should a character's Combat ever be reduced to Zero it would be slain as well. The Combat stat is the always the number that resides in the grey circle icon in the middle of the card.

  4. Archetype - Main Card Type
All cards in the Universal Card game are always listed as "Archetype - Main Card Type". The archetype of the Terra Character is Terra. Effects and abilities can be limited to only certain Archetypes or main types of cards.

  5. Designator
The Designator is a special identifier given to character cards. This identifier shows the card's allegiance which allows it to become stronger or weaker based on the abilities of other cards in the Playing Field.

  6. Keyword Abilities
Keyword Abilities are shared abilities that cards may have along with their unique abilities. Keyword Abilities are in bold text and are at the top of the character card's text box. They are centered at the top as well. Refer to the Keyword abilities section of this manual for a detailed explanation of each Keyword Ability.

  7. Rules Text
This is the section of the text box that any game related text would go in addition to the abilities granted by Keyword Abilities. There are three main types of abilities in the Universal Card Game:

    • Triggered Ability - These are abilities that require a condition. They will always resolve once the condition has been met. (Example: Whenever Red Totem Wing inflicts damage to a player during an Encounter, Deal Two damage to target character.)
    • Activated Ability - These are abilities on the card that require a condition to be paid in order for the ability to resolve its affect. (Example: Dispose of Cacodemon: Return Target character to Owner’s hand.)
    • Passive Ability - A Passive Ability is an ability that is always in affect as long as the card with the ability remains in play. (Example: All your characters get +1 Combat.)
  8. Flavor Text
This is text that relates to the story of the card and the game. It is always in quotation marks and in italics. Flavor Text has no bearing on the rules or abilities of the card.

  9. Serial Number
This is the card's unique identifier for the game from which it is from. All cards from the Universal Card Game have the game abbreviation UCG. This is then followed by the card's Stability and lastly, the card number.

  10. Set Symbol
The Set Symbol for the Universal Card Game set. The first set of the Universal Card Game is called "The Neo Beginning" or just NEO.

Epic Characters

  • No Terra Cost
Epic Characters do not have a Terra Cost, so there is no number in the top left corner of the card.
  • Epic Condition
Underneath the Keyword Abilities is the Epic Character's Epic Condition. The player must meet and pay this condition in order to play an Epic Character. If the card does not have a written Epic Condition, it is assumed that is has no additional cost to play it.

Token Characters

  • No Terra Cost
Token Characters do not have a Terra Cost. There is no number in the top left corner of the card.
  • Token Type
Token Characters have a Token Type instead of a card name. Any ability that would affect a card's name does NOT affect Token Characters.
Note: Some cards in the game may generate a Token Character with a name, these cards follow rules associated with card names. (Example: Executor Williams)
  • Token Ability
Token Characters always have a written Token ability that states what card(s) generate the Token.

NOTE: All Token Characters have a Token Ability. This ability does not remove a Token from being a Vanilla Character if it has no abilities besides the Token Ability.

Card Layout Diagram Flip Characters

Flip Character

  • Card Names
The Flip Character has two distinct card names, Archetypes, main card types, and combat stats. The side that has its Terra cost on top left is the initial form of the Flip Character.

  • Serial Number/Legal Information
The Serial number for the Flip Character is on the side of the card instead of the bottom along with the legal/set information.

Terra Effect

  • No Combat or Power
The Terra Effect does not have Combat or Power stat, however it does have a Timing. Be sure to pay attention to the Timing of the Terra Effect.
  • Timing
As stated prior, Terra Effects have a Timing associated with them. This would affect when the card could be played or if it would stay in play.
  • Archetype(s)
Many Terra Effects will have multiple Archetypes. Be sure to check if the card has the Archetype of Status, as it would need to be attached to another card in play.

Card Layout Diagram Pitfall Effects

Pitfall Effects

  • No Combat or Power
The Pitfall Effect does not have a Combat or Power stat.
  • Timing
If the Timing of the Pitfall Effect is Proxy (Face Up) or Hidden (Face Down) you would need to place the card face up or face down.
  • Bide or Contact Ability
Each Pitfall Effect has an ability that would determine when and if it would come into play or resolve its ability. This is regardless of Timing.
  • Engage Ability
The Engage Ability is only on Pitfall Effect cards that have the Timing of Hidden. Once the Contact condition is met and paid the Engage ability can be used.

Architect Cards

  • Resource Requirement
The Shadow Master has a Resource Requirement rather than a Terra Cost. This number is represented in Roman Numerals rather than numbers like the character card.
  • Power
The Shadow Architect is almost identical to the Terra Character card except that it has a Power Stat instead of a Combat Stat. The Power Stat is always the number that is listed in the grey circle in the middle of the card. This icon has a battery symbol in it unlike the plain symbol of the character card's Combat Stat.
  • Assimilate Ability or Assimilation
This is the ability of the Shadow Architect that is used at the beginning of your draw step.
  • Retribution Abilities
These are the abilities that use the Retribution counters generated by the Assimilation ability. Be sure you meet the required cost of each of these abilities in order to use them.

  • Card Name
Make sure to remember that Standard Resource cards do NOT have a card name and the Unique Resource cards DO have a card name.
